Overview
The City of Fremantle is committed to preserving, caring for and improving our total environment. In so doing, we are mindful of the need to incorporate sustainability principles into all our activities, to take account of not only the needs of current but also future generations and to work with other organisations to preserve precious and limited resources to achieve the vision for Fremantle.

The City of Fremantle as a local government authority, is well placed to lead responsible environmental management, working closely with Fremantle’s environmentally aware community in such forums as the Precinct System, the only such system in WA.

The City of Fremantle is committed to incorporating sustainability principles into our decision-making and operational processes. It is this incorporation of sustainability into all of our activities that has rewarded the City of Fremantle with awards from the Western Australian Environment Award 2002 for the Government Leading by Example category, finalists in the Banksia Awards 2003 for the Government Leading by Example and Adult Learners Award for Outstanding Environmental Care Program (for Living Smart) in 2003. We plan to continue on this leading edge path for the benefit of the community and the environment.

Strategic Framework for Sustainability
The City of Fremantle is guided by our key policy document, the Fremantle Strategic Plan 2006-2010, which articulates our long term strategies. The Mission Statement expresses a commitment to sustainability:

To enable the achievement of our vision, the City of Fremantle (the organisation) is an efficient and progressive local government, providing leadership and valued services to the community is known as:

An accessible, responsive and forward thinking organisation that actively engages the community

A leader in sustainability issues and programs with a strong track record in environmental management.

Environment and the City of Fremantle
In line with the Strategic Plan and to address climate change, an Environmental Action Plan has been developed to guide action to promote environmental sustainability internally and in the wider community. It employs a range of mechanisms: regulation, organisational initiatives and educational initiatives and incentives to promote change in the wider community.

As part of the Environmental Action Plan, the City of Fremantle will also be giving more consideration to how we report against sustainability objectives (KPI report, Council Items etc). This is to ensure that everything we do as an organisation is in line with what the Strategic and Environmental Action Plans set out to achieve and that we can assess whether we are progressing in the right direction. As a local government authority, we are well placed to lead responsible environmental management being able to work closely with the local community on environmental programs.
The City has three major themes relating to environmental responsibility:

  • Using Council resources in a responsible, efficient and cost-effective way.
  • Taking responsibility for decisions, performance and achievements of agreed outcomes.
  • Consideration of the environmental impact of all our actions to ensure responsible environmental management and minimal waste.
